The State Administration of
Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) is increasingly stricter to the regulation
of OTT industry, the video APPs on TV are removed off one by one, but the OTT
industry is still very hot. SARFT’s supervision oppressed the vicious
competition of cheap copy STB; meanwhile formal manufacturers take this
opportunity to dig deeper in potential OTT technology. Smart city, smart hotel,
and smart home are no longer just dreams; they are all coming to real life with
the applying of STB ecosystem. Today, we invited Hanney Lee, product director
of SDMC TECH to talk about STB ecosystem. Hanney Lee has accumulated more than
ten years of working experiences in the areas of STB and obtained multiple STB
innovative technology invention patents.
Editor: Tri-networks
integration (telecommunication, Internet and broadcasting networks into one
complete system) has been repeated for many years. Now OTT technology become
mature gradually, OTT STB has be sold to millions of homes and penetrated into
every aspect of our lives, and the concept of STB Ecosystem Construction Concept
appeared and become an upsurge in STB industry. As an STB industry veteran, how
you see the STB Ecosystem Construction Concept?
Hanney Lee: The STB Ecosystem
Construction Concept heats up because the OTT technology is becoming mature. It
is a nature result. Years ago, we don’t have fast network like now, no On-line
Payment System, no interactive multi-screen technology and Apps, so we couldn’t
make ecosystem. Then technology development quickly and fully used and applied
to STB industry, together with traditional industries, they complement each
other and experience interactions to make the complete STB Ecosystem.
Editor: Which traditional
industries you mean when you say involved in making the STB Ecosystem?
Hanney Lee: In addition to
television, there are financial, education, health care, shopping, game, smart
home, and so on.
Editor: People’s lives are definitely
to be changed with these industries involved in making the STB Ecosystem; so the
demand of STB Ecosystem is coming from our daily life requirements, right?
Hanney Lee: Right. Life is
becoming smarter. People are having higher demands on food, shelter,
transportation, travel, purchase and entertainment. All is about to be “Perfect”
or say “Lazy Life”. Traditional service industries need to comply with this
tide, and involving in STB Ecosystem is the best way.
Editor: To our normal people,
we know the rise of the Internet makes life smarter, more interesting and convenient.
However, we are far to “Perfect”. STB Ecosystem is made to give us "the
wise way of life", so can you give an example?
Hanney Lee: Examples are many.
Such as when your country doesn’t have a TV rating system, children are
available to watch bloody violent programs, you can use the Remote Education
functions in your STB to change the programs to children's programs. When your
old parents live alone and you want to know health status, you can use the Online
Health Care function. And when you in a hotel of a new city, you can use hotel
STB to help you familiar with everything in this city, like transportation,
shopping, restaurants, scenic spots and so on.
Editor: Speaking of hotel STB,
SDMC TECH has hotel TV solutions, right? I heard that not many domestic hotels
use SDMC TECH’s hotel TV solutions, but also overseas hotels uses too.
Hanney Lee: Yes, our smart
hotel solutions are very popular in China and many starred hotels cooperate
with us. We offer different solutions to five start hotels and chain hotels.
Recently, a famous Thailand chain hotel has installed our hotel STB and using
our hotel management systems.
Editor: Wow, congratulations, dose
your hotel solutions get involved in STB Ecosystem Construction too?
Hanney Lee: Of course, it does.
Hotel STB is same to the STB used in community, financial, hospital, school,
home and so on. It will change our life and it is a part of the STB Ecosystem
Construction. Hotel itself is a micro ecosystem with smart STB
installed. The STB start serving every customer once he entered a hotel. It
provides almost any information related to travel. Such as info of the nearby
malls, stores, restaurants, famous scenic spots, and weather, tickets of
airway, railway, special local product and so on. All a customer needs to do is
to open his hotel room TV. In addition, he can also watch HD Movie, play games
and stocks and everything he can do with his home smart TV.
Editor: That sounds awesome! How
it works?
Hanney Lee: Making the STB Ecosystem
needs supports from television manufactures, content operators, channel operators,
app providers, network operators and intelligence control system providers. STB
suppliers and television manufactures provides equipment, content operators and
channel operators provides the programs, network operators provides network,
intelligence control system provides service and channel operators exploit the
market.
Editor: It
sounds like an STB industry alliance. Is it same to the “Smart Home Industry Alliance”
that China Telecom build on 24th July with some chip suppliers, equipment
manufacturers, and content providers?
Hanney Lee: Yes,
quite similar. The STB industry chain is not mature enough, so all related
industries join together, build the alliance to control risks.
Editor: We’ve talked how STB
Ecosystem born and the current stage of development. Can you share your
thoughts about the trends of the STB Ecosystem?
Hanney Lee: According to the
situation of our country, the leading roles are the content provider SARFT and
the network provider China Telecom. It’s hard to tell which one will be winner
and whether these two leaders will cooperate with each other or not, it’s
creates a great business chance to STB providers. SDMC’s STB technology is
ready for cooperation and we are preparing for any kind of cooperation with
them.
