When it comes to the differences between Android TV and pure Android, i would like to talk it from the following aspects:
· Launcher
(Android TV vs AOSP)
Android TV has a special users interface and services that are designed specifically for a TV. Operators can customize their own launchers.
· APPS
Android TV allows access to an increasing number of third-party apps and services through the Google Play Store. The end-users can enjoy
endless original content including Netflix, YouTube, Sling, and Hulu, etc.
· Control
By using AOSP, you keep total control over every single element of the user experience; With Android TV OS, the Control of innovation cycle largely in Google’s hands.
· TTM
Google has done most of the work. Development time is minimal, as DRM support, search, recommendation and more all work ’out of the box ’, greatly speeding up your time-to-market.
· CAPEX
Even though traditionally, Android TV has had higher hardware requirements than AOSP, those requirements have lowered over time. Additionally, Android TV requires (much) less development resources.
· OPEX
To run Android TV, you need to upgrade regularly and timely. The associated costs should be offset by massive savings on development costs associated with new features and functionality, though.
· Search & Recommendation
Personalized Recommendations, Search and Voice control within Android TV.
· Features
The Android TV feature-set is difficult and expensive to emulate on AOSP. On Android TV, most features ‘just work’ and are constantly enhanced.
· Customization
Even though the Operator Tier Certification allows the use of custom Android TV launchers, there are still limits to the amount Android TV can be tweaked and changed. AOSP has no such limitations. you need to meet Google’s licensing requirements.
Android TV VS AOSP, which one should you choose?
As we know, Android TV is specifically designed for TV’s and stand-alone digital media players, It takes a minimum of development time for OEM’s to add advanced interactive TV capabilities to their devices. The most complicated thing for customers is that Android TV project needs certification for each project. SDMC got Android TV license and we have the ability to submit certification to Google. However, whether Google is willing to certify the project and model, it is depending on how big the project is. Google will provide more support to operators compared with Retailers.
If you need to access android app ecosystem and have the ability to meet Google’s licensing requirements, Android TV will be good for you. If you don’t want to spend time on Google’s Android TV certification, it’s no doubt pure Android will be your best choice.
